J-Movie: Kuroshitsuji/Black Butler Review

Before you read any further, my review may be biased because I am a huge fan of Kuroshitsuji.

When the news of kuroshitsuji live-adaptation film was given a green-lit, i was very skeptical if this will turn out any flop. Many otakus will know when manga-adapted movies all turn out terrible and majority of the films have an awkward flow and plot. Then, when the news of the cast was released, i was even more worried because Ciel became a girl?!?!?!?!??! It's like they are trying to push for a het!sebastian x ciel and then there was this rumor that the identity of ciel will be changed. Also, a mix model for undertaker? My mindset back then was "SHIT THIS IS GOING TO BE A MAJOR FLOP"

When they release the trailer of kuroshitsuji.

I changed my mind about the movie because Mizushima Hiro did a well job portraying Sebastian!!! Still worried about Ayame Goriki portraying as Kiyoharu Genpo (we all know as ciel), but since it was a Warner bros. Japan film, it wouldn't be so bad. I was looking forward to watch the movie but when it was announced the release date, i was a bit sad that it wasn't release worldwide until March!!!

SPOILERS BELOW!

I was late for the movie so I couldn't catch the front part where Sebastian was flying around with his cutleries but I did manage to catch a scene of Sebby holding a knife so yay! I was trying to control not to spazz over Mizushima Hiro because it's been so long since i last saw him act! When the camera was focused on Kiyoharu, i was shocked that they kept the "male" side by making her cross dress.

I was confused throughout the movie because the entire movie was set in a futuristic Japan with all the flying steam ships, robot-ish police and the whole setting was very sci-fi then next scene will be a countryside with a Victorian-style mansion. A bit weird because the original setting was set in the early Victorian days. Into the mansion, we see Kiyoharu is playing chess with an English man (played by shirota yuu) and we were wondering who was his original character. Our guess was Lord Aleister Chamber, the viscount.

When we were in the mansion, everyone's reaction in the cinema was "WHERE IS TANAKA" and bam! they showed you tanaka, which is slightly younger looking than the original, and he doesn't say "ho ho ho" but just sip his green tea. BOO i wanted to hear him go hohoho. They also left out characters like Bard and Finny. It was focused more on Lyn (original Mey-rin) and they also changed her background. She's a bodyguard of kiyoharu contrary to an assassin.

Back to the main plot, this movie was focused on the mummified scene, a bit similar to the case where undertaker was involved with "manufacturing" mummies. They used that idea for the first case where we had Aunt hanae (madam red) being involved and then killed afterwards. I was expecting Grell to appear, but no, the scriptwriters made undertaker appear instead. A bit disappointing though because undertaker wasn't so relevant in the front and we were so hopeful when Aunt hanae died, we expected her butler to transform into Grell and i was honestly waiting for the Romeo and Juliet scene:

Boooo they didn't and they made sebastian and kiyoharu emotional beings. Also, remember the scene where ciel was supposed to wear the corset and dress as a girl, mey-rin took over instead booooooooo

Oh but the most exciting part? SPOILERS!!!!

SEBASTIAN 'KISSED' KIYOHARU!!! okay, that was too much but sebby was trying to save her. WHO CARES WHEN YOU CAN IMAGINE/SEE HER AS CIEL AND SEBBY AND CIEL KISSED KFAJKFHASJFKHSAFJSAHFJAFHSAJ

ahem.

The movie may have fill in some question marks about the series, like, how sebby gets his information, how the police is always involved but never really taken any action.

To sum things up, despite the lack of important characters in the movie, this movie is very good as a stand-alone. LIKE REALLY REALLY GOOD. I've never felt a manga-adapted movie was good (last was death note) and kuroshitsuji movie is really up to it's name and I strongly suggest everyone to watch it. You will start comparing, definitely, but it is worth the money.
